Miranda Cosgrove won me over completely in School of Rock and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. At 17, she’s already starring in her own show, iCarly on Nickelodeon, and is now moving into more mature roles, like her guest appearance on The Good Wife. I have wanted to work with Miranda for years so I was thrilled when I finally got the chance to meet her and collaborate with her for these images!

“I’m pretty low-key when it comes to makeup. Foundation, mascara and maybe a little blush. I try not to go too crazy and I don’t like to spend too much time doing it. Putting mascara on in the passenger’s seat of a moving car is actually one of my hidden talents. I’m really awesome at it! As for my hair, I’m pretty happy with it. It has always been super-straight and I wished it was curly. Lately it’s randomly turned wavy, which is kind of my dream!”

MTB: What was the inspiration for Miranda’s make up?
Kayleen McAdams: I wanted to keep Miranda’s look in the barefaced vein that she arrived in; gorgeous, pale skin, nothing on the eyes, and strong brows. The clothes made me envision a cool, crisp fall day and I manifested that in her brown-red lips and soft, smudgy eyes. We took her own style and just amplified that up.
To get Miranda’s flawless complexion, start with . Next, use on cheekbones, under brow bone, and the inner corners of eyes as a light reflecting highlighter. And on the cheeks.
Kayleen McAdams: “If you want to give a bold lip staying power I recommend using lip liner as your first step. You can start out by filling in the lip with a neutral toned lip liner, after that follow up with your chosen lipstick color and AFTER applying the lipstick, tighten up the edges with a lip liner that is a slightly darker shade than your lipstick. Filling in with a neutral liner first sets the color well but allows you to play with the shape of the lips more than a dark pencil would.”

“I’d like to have a career like Anne Hathaway. I’ve been following her career since I was really young—I remember watching The Princess Diaries with my friends—and I really respect the movies she’s in now, too. I love making iCarly, but I’m ready to do something more mature. I’m ready to take that leap.”

Kayleen McAdams: For this look we wanted to give the eyes some emphasis but keep them in the background and let the lips shine front and center. To do this I avoided using an eyelash curler, liner, or mascara. I used warm caramel and terracotta shadows for the first coupls of looks and then switched to deeper browns for the last few looks (like the one above.) The key is to blend the shadows very well with a fluffly brush and remember: only shadows, you want this look to be soft!

Mark Townsend: “Miranda has amazing hair and it will do just about anything you want it to. I am loving that we are seeing hair that is a little more polished, not so much of the beachy waves that have been everywhere. I showed Miranda lots of references for this shoot and we both loved the idea of taking very lady-like clothes and giving them a young, modern twist which is what I did with her hair as well. I blow dried Miranda’s hair and then used a large 2 inch curling iron to create soft waves.”
Try before blowdrying for lots of volume and shine.
