The River Café in London “I’m filming Hysteria in London right now, and The River Café is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I only have one day off each week, so I’ve been trying to make it there for lunch on Saturdays. It’s the best.”

. “I absolutely love this album—I think everyone does. I met the band in Montreal and they were very cool.”

. “My makeup artist Molly Stern introduced me to this mascara. It doesn’t even look like you’re wearing mascara, it never gets under your eyes, and you can just wash it off with water. Perfect!”

(discontinued!) “This was my very, very favorite lip stain but they don’t make it anymore. It comes in this pretty rosy case and it’s just that perfect day-to-day shade that you can put on without even looking. My makeup artist Jeanine Lobell found two online for me but now I only have one left!”

Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color “Tom Ford sent me his entire collection of lipsticks in this beautiful white box. I was just like, ‘You sent this to the right girl!’ They are so beautiful.”

“My girlfriend calls this stuff liquid gold. I love the facial oil and the body oil. The body oil is just so decadent. When I got married I poured it all over myself. I’m really into oil. I drench myself in oil.”

I met Maggie Gyllenhaal a few years ago when I went to style her hair for the ShoWest Festival in Las Vegas around the time The Dark Knight was coming out. I have always been such a fan of Maggie’s work and love the brave choices she makes with the roles she plays (Secretary, Sherrybaby, Away We Go, and Crazy Heart on all on my favorite movie list!) I remember that I was insanely nervous to work with her because I’ve always thought that she is the coolest, most stylish lady in Hollywood and I was afraid she wouldn’t think I was cool enough. I was completely correct about her being cool and stylish but I guess she did think I was cool enough because she asked me to do her hair for The Dark Knight film premiere! I absolutely love working with Maggie, she is a dream to collaborate with. In fact, the inspiration for this shoot came from a photograph in Maggie’s house from the ’30s that she has always loved and wanted to recreate in a modern way. Maggie inspires me in so many ways; as an actress, a mother, and as a friend and I think I am the luckiest kid in town that I get to work with her!

Molly Stern: “For Maggie’s look we wanted to do something current yet inspired by the beauties of the 1930s. On her skin I kept it bare using La Mer Treatment Powder Foundation just to matte the shine and on the cheek I used . I based the eye with ByTerry Cream Eye Shadow in Ombre Blackstar and used a combination of and to keep the eye vibrant yet dark. For her lip I used with Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Gloss Pur over top.” ( This gloss was a limited edition but you can find it on ebay!)

Maggie Gyllenhaal: “I like lipstick, and I always have kind of a stain-y lipstick in my purse. I have like 30 of them and I grab whichever one is around and I reapply during the day, but I almost never wear other kind of makeup.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal: “I’ve gotten more comfortable working with people who are experts at their job like Molly Stern, who did the make up for these pictures, and Jeanine Lobell. We’ll talk about what we want to do and they’ll say something like “You know what, orange lipstick is going to look beautiful, can I please just do it?” and I would let them because they know more about make up than I do and they’ve done my make up enough that I trust them. It’s the same with Mark (Townsend) and one or two other people with my hair. The last time Mark cut my hair I didn’t ask him what he was doing. I barely looked in the mirror, I was just like “yeah sure cut my hair, I’m sure it will look good.”

Mark Townsend: “Maggie has gorgeously thick, wavy hair so for many events I have kept her hair soft and very natural but for this shoot I was inspired by the textured bobs from the 1930s so I set her hair in small half inch rollers and let them cool while she had her make up done. After I removed the rollers, I pulled the curls apart with my fingers to give them separation and scrunched the hair while spraying Dove Extra Hold Hairspray all over to give the hair hold and create texture. In these photographs I love the way the light shines through the hair, I just love this texture!”

Molly Stern: “When creating an eye like this, keep the focus of the pigment on the lid and don’t be afraid of the undereye smudge. The key to that is to use your vibrant shade with a more nuetral base like , that way you won’t end up looking like you have a black eye. If you want to wear the lip all day, I suggest , it’s sheer, gorgeous and it lasts!”

Gaining fame before your first birthday could mess with a person’s head. Unless, of course, you’re Ashley Olsen, and you were born with an insatiable desire to work—and to succeed, at that. At the age of twenty-four, she’s starred in countless TV shows, a handful of movies, recorded an album, interned for Zac Posen, written a book, inspired fashion movements, edited a magazine and launched three distinct, uber-successful fashion lines. So it’s fitting, then, that her proudest accomplishment has nothing to do with fame. Instead, it’s decidedly business-oriented. “Our most important accomplishment was gaining control of our company and taking our future into our own hands,” she told us this fall. You might also think that this young mogul, who’s been named to Forbes’s Celebrity 100 list multiple times, spends her free time swilling champagne in exclusive clubs, jetting to exotic locales and generally embracing The Good Life. Not so. “My idea of relaxing is staying home and spending time with my friends, my dog and doing yoga whenever I can,” she said. Perhaps it’s this innate business savvy mixed with her chilled-out, low key outlook that’s responsible for her success. When asked about her long-term career goals, Olsen didn’t wax poetic about expanding her empire. Instead, she responded humbly and without missing a beat: “Making it through fashion week.” Point taken.

“This is quintessential Ashley Olsen. She is my hair muse—and I didn’t even have to pick up a hair dryer to give her this look,” said Townsend. “This is her natural hair texture, just a little enhanced.” Townsend wrapped big chunks of hair around a 1-½” curling iron and let them set for ten seconds before releasing the clamp. He spritzed beach spray on his hands, then raked it through her hair to break up the spirals. He finished with a blast of dry shampoo. “That’s what creates that perfect Olsen texture.”

“The inspiration for these photos were the classic Avedon portraits of celebrities and models from the sixties,” said Polito. “They have a great simplicity and purity about them. I wanted to create a beautiful image—and keep the focus of the look really on Ashley’s eyes.” He swept a sand-hued shadow along her lids and topped it with black liner along the top and bottom lashlines. To soften the lines, he brushed on a chocolate brown shadow and finished with a few coats of rich, black mascara. “These pictures capture the essence of Ashley—she looks beautiful and timeless,” he said.
