I really do not know where to begin when writing about my client and my friend Amy Adams. She is the client I have worked with the longest, almost 8 years now, and I feel like we have “grown up” in this business together. I met Amy on a photo shoot for GQ magazine back in 2002, and I loved her immediately. We were shooting in the middle of the night at a bus stop on Fairfax Avenue and to pass the time, keep warm, and keep spirits up Amy and I were sneaking shots of tequila between set ups and telling funny stories from our pasts. Throughout the years, Amy has kept me busy woking on the most enviable mane of hair I have ever seen and she’s kept me laughing with her insane sense of humor and some of my favorite moments have been impromptu sing alongs to the soundtrack of The Little Mermaid.

Amy was one of the first people who agreed to do a photo shoot for this project and when we talked about her look for the shoot she said she always wanted to have “wispy, layered hair” and wanted to play with bangs so I got a few wigs for us to play with. Amy is naturally blonde, but I love her as a red head, she has experimented with many different shades from deep red to strawberry and she has also been pretty bold with her hair cuts, she will grow it until she can’t take it anymore and then go for a big chop, cutting it to her shoulders.
Striped top: Charlotte Ronson. Earrings: Tiffany and Co.
Amy was actually pregnant when we did this shoot and watching her become a mother has been so beautiful. I feel so lucky that I have been able to see Amy receive so many amazing accolades for her incredible acting skills, but seeing her with her daughter is what makes me most proud to be her friend.

Gillian Zinser
I recently had the opportunity to meet and work with the incredible Gillian Zinser from 90210. I had such a blast collaborating with her, she is so smart, funny, clever and stunningly beautiful. She came to the photo shoot with so many great ideas and brought her spirit to these images and gave them a modern, whimsical feel. I think Gillian is amazingly talented, I cannot wait to see where her career is headed!

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT BEAUTY TRICK YOU’VE EVER LEARNED AND WHY?
GZ: Don’t over pluck your eyebrows. You’ll miss them one day.
WHAT IS BEAUTY TO YOU?
GZ: Grace. Confidence. Ryan Gosling.
WHAT’S YOUR DAY TO DAY BEAUTY ROUTINE?
GZ: Chapstick. Horribly addicted. Currently on a 12-step program I found on the internet to ween myself off. Other than that, I’m pretty laissez-faire. Dermalogica and YON-KA on my skin, and Kerastase when I need to tame my wild mane.

Rachel Goodwin: Gillian is a free spirit with a real penchant for the avant garde. I loved that she wanted to experiment with neon colors and abstract shapes for our shoot. Gillian see’s make up as an opportunity to experiment with ideas versus just beautification and that’s always really challenging and fun for me as an artist. I played with geometric shapes and vivid shades on her, taking a more bare bones approach to the rest of the make up, focusing mostly on the bold shapes and color. I used professional make up palette by Kryolan to create the look which are essentially face-paints. They can be found online or at places like Namie’s or Nigel’s Beauty here in Los Angeles or Alcone in NY.

Gillian’s hair is AMAZING! I am sure her hair will do anything you want it to, but I loved the texture in her hair when she arrived in the studio so I just took a 1 1/2 inch curling iron and wrapped random sections of hair around it and then I used a small amount of on her hair to give it some extra shine.

MTB: What is beauty to you?
AT: To me, beauty is an attitude, more often than not. Whether it’s your own or in other people.
MTB: What role have you had that was most interesting to you from a beauty perspective?
AT: When I was at drama school in Australia, we used to have to do our own hair and make-up for stage performances. I always loved that. I would spend hours pouring through reference pictures. All the details of make-up and hair from the ’30s or ’40s or whatever time the play was set. I had my grandma teach me to roll my hair for that ’40s look, the way she used to do it, with a wooden spoon!
MTB: Tell me about the hair and make-up routine for “Fringe.”
AT: Simple! We have always tried to keep the look very simple, pony tails and minimal make up. She is an FBI agent and we thought to have her all ‘glam’ would be ridiculous.
MTB: What’s the best beauty trick you learned on set?
AT: Shading! Even with simple make-up you still want to make sure that there is some definition in your face. I am amazed how much shading can alter your face shape and help to hide imperfections.
MTB: Have you always been a blond? Would you experiment with other shades?
AT: I haven’t always been blonde, no. I’ve experimented with many shades. But I am enjoying the blonde for the moment.
MTB: Would you ever chop it all off? Why or why not?
AT: Twice have I gone with a drastic cut. Once into a tom boy shag and another time into a buzz cut. I still have the hair from the first time I cut it. You feel very exposed for the first few weeks, especially after having a big head of hair to hide behind. I think that long hair is much easier to manage. When it is short you have to style it and constantly trim. So from a maintenance perspective, long is much easier to manage.
MTB: What’s it like to watch yourself on screen or flip through magazines and see yourself?
AT: Sometimes it is fine, sometimes I cringe, and sometimes when I see pictures from a great shoot, I wish I woke up like that.
MTB: Is that an experience you’re comfortable with?
AT: I am getting more comfortable with it the more I do it. Working with different photographers and hair and makeup teams is all part of the learning experience.
MTB: What’s your favorite feature? Why? Which part of yourself are you most critical of (if any…)?
AT: These two questions are interchangeable. It is so connected to my mood and my attitude!

Armani Foundation. “I was introduced to Armani’s foundations on the show and I use them in my life now. They aren’t as thick as most foundations but still give more coverage than a tinted moisturizer and the texture is like silk.”
. “I love them. Light and just blends with your natural coloring without looking like you are wearing much.”
Mac Sculpting Powder. “I use Bone Beige to define the jaw line and give more contours to my face.” Sadly this product has been discontinued, but you can still find it on ebay!
. “For a pick me up. Better than a concealer under the eye and it really does give you lift.”
. “Because I wear make up everyday it is really important to properly clean my skin. I have been using the Clarisonic brush at night and I love it.”
Skin 2 Skin Photo-Aging Repair Cream. “I lather it on my neck and chest which seems to have taken most of the beatings the Australian sun has to offer”

A few years ago while driving in Los Angeles I noticed billboards everywhere for a new television show called Fringe and I was very intrigued, mostly by this gorgeous blonde woman with the gorgeous eyes gazing down upon Sunset Boulevard. I tuned in for the first episode and was instantly hooked. I haven’t missed an episode since!
I’m so used to seeing Anna on Fringe with a tight pony-tail and very natural looking make up so my first instinct for this shoot was to give her a very glam, editorial look but when she arrived at the studio I was so blown away by how beautiful she is that I didn’t want to cover that up. Within minutes of meeting her, we were all joking around and having a good time and I wanted that to show in the photos.

Robin Black: “The biggest secret to creating the perfect smoky eye is to blend! Build the color out from the eye, keeping the darkest shade along the lash line and then blending out to the crease. I love a nude lip and NARS makes a great updated version of the classic call , it’s a pale nude with enough warmth to work on most fair skin tones. However, if you are olive skinned or darker, I prefer another which is a tad less pale and more peach.”
Robin Black: “Great looking skin starts with skin care, so to prep Anna’s skin I patted in a small amount of under her eyes, around the corners of her nose and any other spot where dryness occurs. Next, I applied a liberal amount of La Mer Lip Balm and allowed it to sink in while I did the rest of her make up. To create a natural looking, flawless finish, I used a sheer tinted moisturizer blended over the entire face and then lightly brushed a small amount of concealer over any area with redness. I skipped the powder and spritzed the face with organic rose water to add a glow.”

Miranda Cosgrove won me over completely in School of Rock and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. At 17, she’s already starring in her own show, iCarly on Nickelodeon, and is now moving into more mature roles, like her guest appearance on The Good Wife. I have wanted to work with Miranda for years so I was thrilled when I finally got the chance to meet her and collaborate with her for these images!

“I’m pretty low-key when it comes to makeup. Foundation, mascara and maybe a little blush. I try not to go too crazy and I don’t like to spend too much time doing it. Putting mascara on in the passenger’s seat of a moving car is actually one of my hidden talents. I’m really awesome at it! As for my hair, I’m pretty happy with it. It has always been super-straight and I wished it was curly. Lately it’s randomly turned wavy, which is kind of my dream!”

MTB: What was the inspiration for Miranda’s make up?
Kayleen McAdams: I wanted to keep Miranda’s look in the barefaced vein that she arrived in; gorgeous, pale skin, nothing on the eyes, and strong brows. The clothes made me envision a cool, crisp fall day and I manifested that in her brown-red lips and soft, smudgy eyes. We took her own style and just amplified that up.
To get Miranda’s flawless complexion, start with . Next, use on cheekbones, under brow bone, and the inner corners of eyes as a light reflecting highlighter. And on the cheeks.
Kayleen McAdams: “If you want to give a bold lip staying power I recommend using lip liner as your first step. You can start out by filling in the lip with a neutral toned lip liner, after that follow up with your chosen lipstick color and AFTER applying the lipstick, tighten up the edges with a lip liner that is a slightly darker shade than your lipstick. Filling in with a neutral liner first sets the color well but allows you to play with the shape of the lips more than a dark pencil would.”

“I’d like to have a career like Anne Hathaway. I’ve been following her career since I was really young—I remember watching The Princess Diaries with my friends—and I really respect the movies she’s in now, too. I love making iCarly, but I’m ready to do something more mature. I’m ready to take that leap.”

Kayleen McAdams: For this look we wanted to give the eyes some emphasis but keep them in the background and let the lips shine front and center. To do this I avoided using an eyelash curler, liner, or mascara. I used warm caramel and terracotta shadows for the first coupls of looks and then switched to deeper browns for the last few looks (like the one above.) The key is to blend the shadows very well with a fluffly brush and remember: only shadows, you want this look to be soft!
Dress: Oscar de la Renta. Hair pin: Jennifer Behr. Nail color: Chanel Nail Colour Imperial.
Mark Townsend: “Miranda has amazing hair and it will do just about anything you want it to. I am loving that we are seeing hair that is a little more polished, not so much of the beachy waves that have been everywhere. I showed Miranda lots of references for this shoot and we both loved the idea of taking very lady-like clothes and giving them a young, modern twist which is what I did with her hair as well. I blow dried Miranda’s hair and then used a large 2 inch curling iron to create soft waves.”
Try before blowdrying for lots of volume and shine.
