The River Café in London “I’m filming Hysteria in London right now, and The River Café is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I only have one day off each week, so I’ve been trying to make it there for lunch on Saturdays. It’s the best.”

. “I absolutely love this album—I think everyone does. I met the band in Montreal and they were very cool.”

. “My makeup artist Molly Stern introduced me to this mascara. It doesn’t even look like you’re wearing mascara, it never gets under your eyes, and you can just wash it off with water. Perfect!”

(discontinued!) “This was my very, very favorite lip stain but they don’t make it anymore. It comes in this pretty rosy case and it’s just that perfect day-to-day shade that you can put on without even looking. My makeup artist Jeanine Lobell found two online for me but now I only have one left!”

Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color “Tom Ford sent me his entire collection of lipsticks in this beautiful white box. I was just like, ‘You sent this to the right girl!’ They are so beautiful.”

“My girlfriend calls this stuff liquid gold. I love the facial oil and the body oil. The body oil is just so decadent. When I got married I poured it all over myself. I’m really into oil. I drench myself in oil.”

I met Maggie Gyllenhaal a few years ago when I went to style her hair for the ShoWest Festival in Las Vegas around the time The Dark Knight was coming out. I have always been such a fan of Maggie’s work and love the brave choices she makes with the roles she plays (Secretary, Sherrybaby, Away We Go, and Crazy Heart on all on my favorite movie list!) I remember that I was insanely nervous to work with her because I’ve always thought that she is the coolest, most stylish lady in Hollywood and I was afraid she wouldn’t think I was cool enough. I was completely correct about her being cool and stylish but I guess she did think I was cool enough because she asked me to do her hair for The Dark Knight film premiere! I absolutely love working with Maggie, she is a dream to collaborate with. In fact, the inspiration for this shoot came from a photograph in Maggie’s house from the ’30s that she has always loved and wanted to recreate in a modern way. Maggie inspires me in so many ways; as an actress, a mother, and as a friend and I think I am the luckiest kid in town that I get to work with her!

Photographer: Jason McDonald. Hair: Mark Townsend. Make Up: Molly Stern. Styling: Danielle Nachmani. Art Director: Frank Rust. Dress: Lanvin. Gloves: Lanvin. Fur: Chloe.

Molly Stern: “For Maggie’s look we wanted to do something current yet inspired by the beauties of the 1930s. On her skin I kept it bare using La Mer Treatment Powder Foundation just to matte the shine and on the cheek I used . I based the eye with ByTerry Cream Eye Shadow in Ombre Blackstar and used a combination of and to keep the eye vibrant yet dark. For her lip I used with Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Gloss Pur over top.” ( This gloss was a limited edition but you can find it on ebay!)

Maggie Gyllenhaal: “I like lipstick, and I always have kind of a stain-y lipstick in my purse. I have like 30 of them and I grab whichever one is around and I reapply during the day, but I almost never wear other kind of makeup.”

Photographer: Jason McDonald. Hair: Mark Townsend. Make Up: Molly Stern. Styling: Danielle Nachmani. Art Director: Frank Rust. Headpiece: Basha Gold. Fur: Stylist’s own.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: “I’ve gotten more comfortable working with people who are experts at their job like Molly Stern, who did the make up for these pictures, and Jeanine Lobell. We’ll talk about what we want to do and they’ll say something like “You know what, orange lipstick is going to look beautiful, can I please just do it?” and I would let them because they know more about make up than I do and they’ve done my make up enough that I trust them. It’s the same with Mark (Townsend) and one or two other people with my hair. The last time Mark cut my hair I didn’t ask him what he was doing. I barely looked in the mirror, I was just like “yeah sure cut my hair, I’m sure it will look good.”

Photographer: Jason McDonald. Hair: Mark Townsend. Make Up: Molly Stern. Styling: Danielle Nachmani. Art Director: Frank Rust. Caftan: Yves Saint Laurent.

Mark Townsend: “Maggie has gorgeously thick, wavy hair so for many events I have kept her hair soft and very natural but for this shoot I was inspired by the textured bobs from the 1930s so I set her hair in small half inch rollers and let them cool while she had her make up done. After I removed the rollers, I pulled the curls apart with my fingers to give them separation and scrunched the hair while spraying Dove Extra Hold Hairspray all over to give the hair hold and create texture. In these photographs I love the way the light shines through the hair, I just love this texture!”

Photographer: Jason McDonald. Hair: Mark Townsend. Make Up: Molly Stern. Styling: Danielle Nachmani. Art Director: Frank Rust. Dress: Lanvin. Gloves: Lanvin. Fur: Chloe.

Molly Stern: “When creating an eye like this, keep the focus of the pigment on the lid and don’t be afraid of the undereye smudge. The key to that is to use your vibrant shade with a more nuetral base like , that way you won’t end up looking like you have a black eye. If you want to wear the lip all day, I suggest , it’s sheer, gorgeous and it lasts!”

MTB: What is beauty to you?

AT: To me, beauty is an attitude, more often than not. Whether it’s your own or in other people.

MTB: What role have you had that was most interesting to you from a beauty perspective?

AT: When I was at drama school in Australia, we used to have to do our own hair and make-up for stage performances. I always loved that. I would spend hours pouring through reference pictures. All the details of make-up and hair from the ’30s or ’40s or whatever time the play was set. I had my grandma teach me to roll my hair for that ’40s look, the way she used to do it, with a wooden spoon!

MTB: Tell me about the hair and make-up routine for “Fringe.”

AT: Simple! We have always tried to keep the look very simple, pony tails and minimal make up. She is an FBI agent and we thought to have her all ‘glam’ would be ridiculous.

MTB: What’s the best beauty trick you learned on set?
AT: Shading! Even with simple make-up you still want to make sure that there is some definition in your face. I am amazed how much shading can alter your face shape and help to hide imperfections.

MTB: Have you always been a blond? Would you experiment with other shades?

AT: I haven’t always been blonde, no. I’ve experimented with many shades. But I am enjoying the blonde for the moment.

MTB: Would you ever chop it all off? Why or why not?

AT: Twice have I gone with a drastic cut. Once into a tom boy shag and another time into a buzz cut. I still have the hair from the first time I cut it. You feel very exposed for the first few weeks, especially after having a big head of hair to hide behind. I think that long hair is much easier to manage. When it is short you have to style it and constantly trim. So from a maintenance perspective, long is much easier to manage.

MTB: What’s it like to watch yourself on screen or flip through magazines and see yourself?

AT: Sometimes it is fine, sometimes I cringe, and sometimes when I see pictures from a great shoot, I wish I woke up like that.

MTB: Is that an experience you’re comfortable with?

AT: I am getting more comfortable with it the more I do it. Working with different photographers and hair and makeup teams is all part of the learning experience.

MTB: What’s your favorite feature? Why? Which part of yourself are you most critical of (if any…)?

AT: These two questions are interchangeable. It is so connected to my mood and my attitude!

Armani Foundation. “I was introduced to Armani’s foundations on the show and I use them in my life now. They aren’t as thick as most foundations but still give more coverage than a tinted moisturizer and the texture is like silk.”

. “I love them. Light and just blends with your natural coloring without looking like you are wearing much.”

Mac Sculpting Powder. “I use Bone Beige to define the jaw line and give more contours to my face.” Sadly this product has been discontinued, but you can still find it on ebay!

. “For a pick me up. Better than a concealer under the eye and it really does give you lift.”

. “Because I wear make up everyday it is really important to properly clean my skin. I have been using the Clarisonic brush at night and I love it.”

Skin 2 Skin Photo-Aging Repair Cream. “I lather it on my neck and chest which seems to have taken most of the beatings the Australian sun has to offer”

A few years ago while driving in Los Angeles I noticed billboards everywhere for a new television show called Fringe and I was very intrigued, mostly by this gorgeous blonde woman with the gorgeous eyes gazing down upon Sunset Boulevard. I tuned in for the first episode and was instantly hooked. I haven’t missed an episode since!

I’m so used to seeing Anna on Fringe with a tight pony-tail and very natural looking make up so my first instinct for this shoot was to give her a very glam, editorial look but when she arrived at the studio I was so blown away by how beautiful she is that I didn’t want to cover that up. Within minutes of meeting her, we were all joking around and having a good time and I wanted that to show in the photos.

Leather top: Loyandford.

Robin Black: “The biggest secret to creating the perfect smoky eye is to blend! Build the color out from the eye, keeping the darkest shade along the lash line and then blending out to the crease. I love a nude lip and NARS makes a great updated version of the classic call , it’s a pale nude with enough warmth to work on most fair skin tones. However, if you are olive skinned or darker, I prefer another which is a tad less pale and more peach.”

Robin Black: “Great looking skin starts with skin care, so to prep Anna’s skin I patted in a small amount of under her eyes, around the corners of her nose and any other spot where dryness occurs. Next, I applied a liberal amount of La Mer Lip Balm and allowed it to sink in while I did the rest of her make up. To create a natural looking, flawless finish, I used a sheer tinted moisturizer blended over the entire face and then lightly brushed a small amount of concealer over any area with redness. I skipped the powder and spritzed the face with organic rose water to add a glow.”

A few months ago I worked on this photo shoot for Teen Vogue with Lea Michele and I LOVE the images from the shoot! I love everyday I work with Lea and this one was so special. Regan Cameron is such an amazing photographer and he captured Lea’s amazing spirit and personality in these shots. It was such a beautiful day on the beach in Malibu and I wanted Lea’s hair to have that gorgeous beach-y texture so I got some salt water from the ocean and sprayed it in Lea’s hair and used the to give the hair gorgeous waves.

After the shoot, Lea had an event to go to so I asked her what she wanted to do with her hair and she sat in my chair and said “WOW ME!” With that kind of a challenge I had to pull out all the stops so I gave her a faux bob by pinning her hair under and using clip-in extensions to create the line of the bob. I love that she is so adventurous and let’s me do so many great looks with her hair!

Miranda Cosgrove won me over completely in School of Rock and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. At 17, she’s already starring in her own show, iCarly on Nickelodeon, and is now moving into more mature roles, like her guest appearance on The Good Wife. I have wanted to work with Miranda for years so I was thrilled when I finally got the chance to meet her and collaborate with her for these images!

Dress: Giorgio Armani

“I’m pretty low-key when it comes to makeup. Foundation, mascara and maybe a little blush. I try not to go too crazy and I don’t like to spend too much time doing it. Putting mascara on in the passenger’s seat of a moving car is actually one of my hidden talents. I’m really awesome at it! As for my hair, I’m pretty happy with it. It has always been super-straight and I wished it was curly. Lately it’s randomly turned wavy, which is kind of my dream!”

Dress: vintage. Belt: Jill Stuart. Shoes: Dries Van Noten. Socks: American Apparel. Headband: MARKTbeauty.

MTB: What was the inspiration for Miranda’s make up?

Kayleen McAdams: I wanted to keep Miranda’s look in the barefaced vein that she arrived in; gorgeous, pale skin, nothing on the eyes, and strong brows. The clothes made me envision a cool, crisp fall day and I manifested that in her brown-red lips and soft, smudgy eyes. We took her own style and just amplified that up.

To get Miranda’s flawless complexion, start with . Next, use on cheekbones, under brow bone, and the inner corners of eyes as a light reflecting highlighter. And on the cheeks.

Kayleen McAdams: “If you want to give a bold lip staying power I recommend using lip liner as your first step. You can start out by filling in the lip with a neutral toned lip liner, after that follow up with your chosen lipstick color and AFTER applying the lipstick, tighten up the edges with a lip liner that is a slightly darker shade than your lipstick. Filling in with a neutral liner first sets the color well but allows you to play with the shape of the lips more than a dark pencil would.”

Miranda’s lip color:

Dress: vintage Christian Dior

“I’d like to have a career like Anne Hathaway. I’ve been following her career since I was really young—I remember watching The Princess Diaries with my friends—and I really respect the movies she’s in now, too. I love making iCarly, but I’m ready to do something more mature. I’m ready to take that leap.”

Dress: vintage Christian Dior. Broche: Chanel. Shoes: Sergio Rossi. Socks: American Apparel

Kayleen McAdams: For this look we wanted to give the eyes some emphasis but keep them in the background and let the lips shine front and center. To do this I avoided using an eyelash curler, liner, or mascara. I used warm caramel and terracotta shadows for the first coupls of looks and then switched to deeper browns for the last few looks (like the one above.) The key is to blend the shadows very well with a fluffly brush and remember: only shadows, you want this look to be soft!

Dress: Oscar de la Renta. Hair pin: Jennifer Behr. Nail color: Chanel Nail Colour Imperial.

Mark Townsend: “Miranda has amazing hair and it will do just about anything you want it to. I am loving that we are seeing hair that is a little more polished, not so much of the beachy waves that have been everywhere. I showed Miranda lots of references for this shoot and we both loved the idea of taking very lady-like clothes and giving them a young, modern twist which is what I did with her hair as well. I blow dried Miranda’s hair and then used a large 2 inch curling iron to create soft waves.”

Try before blowdrying for lots of volume and shine.

“There’s a part of me that’s embarrassed when I see School of Rock or old episodes of iCarly on TV—I’m always afraid my friends will be watching, and of course they tease me constantly. But I’m kind of happy I have it, too. It’s like the ultimate scrapbook.”

This Friday Nov. 20th we’re randomly picking 50 Facebook fans to win Miranda’s favorite Neutrogena products. for details.

. “I just got it and it’s my new favorite thing!”

. “I love Chanel nail polish and this one is the perfect shade of red for Fall.”

. “It keeps my lips from getting dry and has the perfect natural tint of color.”
