Emma Stone

With Emma Stone’s rocker-chic style, smoked out gaze, and laid-back locks, it’s no wonder she stole the scene at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. To help this stunning starlet get red carpet-ready, Emma turned to mane man, Mark Townsend, and makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin. Here’s the skinny on how to get her look—straight from the pros who created it:

“I wanted Emma to look young, cool, and modern—and this awards show was the perfect time to play up a rock and roll edge,” says Townsend. To give her strands a textured, sexy feel, Townsend sprayed all over her damp hair, then used a blow dryer—paired with a —to give it lots of volume and movement. To finish the look, he added separation and texture to her hair “by taking one drop of in my hands, warming it in my palms, and raking it through her strands.”

Goodwin then took the reins and created a strong, smoky eye using her current obsession for fall: Khaki green eyeshadow. “I used a liquid metallic version called Ombre D’Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Torrent to cover her eye lid from the lashline to the crease—the golden green hue added an element of fun and sophistication to an ordinary smoky eye.” Then, Goodwin lined her eyes [inner and outer corners] with , and topped them off by curling and coating her lashes with two coats of black mascara. The finishing touch? She swiped Stone’s lips with a pink matte lip color to complement her deeply colored gaze.

Band-Aid Brand by Cynthia Rowley

Similar to Latisse (yet much cheaper and it doesn’t call for a prescription), this lash growth serum contains a peptide that conditions your fringe, enabling the tiny hairs to grow longer—and thicker than—usual. I’ve been using it for two weeks now and I’m completely hooked. Give it a try, I promise you’ll be obsessed in no time! These limited-edition, ‘Dress Up’ adhesive bandages are the chicest way to cover a cut—thanks to their haute designs, which include lace, vibrantly colored sequins, gems, gold chains, and images from a complete runway show. Much like fall’s neutral clothing palette and jewel-toned nail polish, I’ll be wearing them—and you totally should, too.

I couldn’t be more obsessed with this site. Whether you need a dress for a wedding, birthday party, first date—insert special occasion here—this genius .com has you covered. Simply log in, choose a dress/size (don’t worry, they send you a back up just in case the size you chose doesn’t fit), rock it, then return it in the mail (they dry clean it for you, so don’t stress). Pictured above is the gorgeous Badgley Mischka Screen Siren Gown, perfect for a black tie event. I was introduced to this line about a year ago and it completely changed my skin, so it’s only fitting that their latest product would be an immediate favorite of mine. Not only is this lotion super lightweight and moisturizing, but it also fights off harmful UV rays and skin-damaging free radicals with zinc oxide and antioxidants.

This extremely sheer lip color (I know, it looks seriously pigmented but I promise, it’s the lightest wine-colored tint you’ll ever come across) is chock full of jojoba and avocado oil, cocoa and mango butter, and antioxidant grape seed oil to keep your lips kissable. Plus, it’s the perfect way to incorporate a touch of color into your fall makeup palette. Hilfiger’s hiking-meets-rain boot hybrid is fall’s must-have bootie. We’re not used to seeing “Elaine” with such straight hair, but wow does she wear it well. The New Adventures of Old Christine star flaunted sleek, polished strands perfectly coiffed by celebrity stylist Oscar Blandi, who “wanted to keep her look sophisticated for a minimalist effect to complement her dramatic, black Narcisco Rodriguez gown.”

Dying to show off strands like this on Saturday night? Read on for Blandi’s step-by-step instructions:

  1. When hair is wet, spray roots with Oscar Blandi Volume Volumizing Spray and distribute a touch of Oscar Blandi Pronto Gloss throughout the hair to prevent frizz. Then, blow hair dry with a round brush for added oomph.
  2. To create the polished look, rake a small amount of Oscar Blandi Jasmine Oil Serum throughout the hair [using your fingertips]. Then, gently run a flat iron through the hair, keeping it one inch from the roots and leaving the ends softly bent to keep hair looking natural.
  3. Apply another dime-size amount of Oscar Blandi Pronto Gloss to the hair to control frizz and create a natural texture.
  4. Tuck your hair behind your ears, on both sides, securing with a pin to keep the hair in place. Then, finish the look with Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray for additional volume and flexible hold.

Looks We Love: Jenna Fischer

Jenna Fischer

If anyone knows how to take her look from The Office to the Emmys, it’s Jenna Fischer. When figuring out her makeup palette for the Emmys, Jenna and her makeup artist, Molly Stern, decided that they “ wanted to keep it simple and neutral, so that it wouldn’t compete with her gorgeous, vintage Versace gown.”

Here, Stern shares with us the behind the scenes beauty break down on how she got Fischer red-carpet ready. Follow along for a look just like hers:

  1. To start, I prepped Jenna’s skin with Jurlique Lavender Hydrating Mist, then lightly moisturized her skin with SK-11 Facial Treatment Essence.
  2. Next, I applied as a base and gave her cheeks the perfect glow—flushed, but not too rosy—with CoverGirl Simply ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach.
  3. To give Jenna’s eyes a sublte yet smoky effect, I covered the lid with By Terry’s Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Fire, then dusted over it with a metallic beige shadow [one of two in] the NARS Duo in Rajasthan and also applied it in the crease of the eye. Along her lash line, I smudged out the CoverGirl Liquiline Blast in Brown Blaze, then coated her lashes with CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion in Brown.
  4. Finally, we wanted her lip to look defined yet super soft, so I went with Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stain in Mambo and topped it with CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint Lipgloss in Freedom of Peach.

Jenna then turned to celebrity hair stylist for TRESemmé, Mara Roszak, to tousle her tresses. “We really wanted to keep her hair fresh and pretty with a sexy, bed head texture,” says Roszak. To get this look:

  1. Start by parting your hair slightly off center when it’s damp.
  2. Next, apply Phytovolume Actif Volumizer Spray all over your head at the roots, and a pea-size amount of to ends.
  3. Use a medium-size round brush to blow the hair dry and add volume. Then, create waves with a 1 1/4 inch barrel iron, rotating the direction of the wave [rolling the iron upward the root for some and under toward the nape of the neck for others] and leaving the ends of the hair out for a more natural feel.
  4. Gently tease the crown for a little extra height, then break up the waves you’re your fingertips. Keep strands in place with a spritz of Leonor Greyl Voluforme Hair Spray.

Looks We Love: Lea Michele

Lea Michele

Again, Deborah Lippmann nailed it with Lea’s fingertips and toes, painting them both the same shade of navy with silver shimmer called Lady Sings the Blues (from her collection). ”We chose this because she was wearing a very formal—and form-fitting gown—from Oscar de la Renta, so I wanted her nails to be modern and still feel youthful,” adds Lippmann.

For perfect hair, she turned to the mane man himself, Mark Townsend, who found a way to “blend Hollywood and fashion together.” “Lea wanted her hair to look touchable and super modern, so full hair with lots of volume and a bit of roughness was perfect against her flawless gown,” he says.

Follow these simple steps to get Lea Michele’s Bardot-inspired do:

  1. “Lea’s look started with clean hair. Then, to give her hair movement, I added  throughout her strands to make them move in all different directions. For a little extra lift, I used a round brush while blowing her strands dry.”
  2. “Next, I sprayed her hair with Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist to protect it against heat styling damage before using hot tools.” “Then I gave her tresses a subtle bend or ‘S’ curl using a two-inch curling iron, rather than a perfect curl. To do so, curl from the ends all the way up to the root, and set each section with a clip for five to seven minutes, or until cool,” he explains.
  3. “After curling her hair, I scrunched it with to add moisture and hit it with a blow dryer for a look that’s a bit undone. Follow by “warming a pea-sized amount of Dove Frizz Control Therapy Taming Cream between the palms of hands and raking your fingers through your hair to distribute product evenly for shiny, modern texture.
  4. “Finally, to evoke the Brigitte Bardot inspiration, I teased the hair at the crown for extra volume and lift, and finished the look by spraying  on a small, natural bristle eyebrow brush and ran it through her bangs to help hold a middle part. This added touch gives a modern update to ’60s vibe of her hair.

Looks We Love: Emmy Edition

We went straight to the pros that created the red-carpet looks of last night’s Emmys to get the beauty breakdown just for you. Read on for the inside scoop on some of television’s finest actresses…

January Jones

January Jones

This Emmy-nominated Mad Men actress was wearing “my favorite nail shape—a long oval, topped with Dark Side of the Moon, an aubergine hue that’s strong and sophisticated [the really support the complexity of her dress],” says celebrity manicurist, Deborah Lippmann. Copy this look at home by filing both sides of your nail into a “v” (using a 240 grit emery board, so that you don’t cause your nail damage), and rounding off the top so it isn’t pointy. Then, paint your tips the same shade that Lippmann used here!

Post-polish, stylist Mark Townsend went to work on January’s hair, creating “an edgy, fashion-forward look.” “She has to maintain a very specific hair style for her show, so she doesn’t have the freedom to cut her hair. A modern, asymmetrical bob was the perfect way to have fun with her look,” he adds. To copy Ms. Jones’ semi-updo, follow Mark’s lead:

  1. “Second day texture is key to achieve this runway-meets-Hollywood look, so I pre-styled January’s hair the night before using and distributing Dove Curl & Sculpt Defining Mousse throughout her strands. Blow the hair dry with a round brush to add lift.
  2. Then, “set the top section of the hair with large, three-inch Velcro rollers for 15-20 minutes.” For a more dramatic look, “while rollers set, add extensions in the front only to make hair longer in the front and shorter in the back.”
  3. “Spritz throughout with Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist to protect against styling damage, and wrap 1 ½ to 2 inch sections of hair around a one-inch curling iron to create a big, loose wave instead of a tight curl.
  4. “The next day, reapply mousse to add lift to hair, and blow dry gently with a round brush to freshen up ends without setting perfectly. Follow by raking a small amount of Dove Frizz Control Therapy Taming Cream through hair to add smoothness.
  5. “Finish the look by spraying to set the style, but still allow movement.”

Lisa Fonssagrives & January Jones

To complete the look, January’s makeup was then applied by Rachel Goodwin, who’s beauty Inspiration was “Irving Penn’s iconic photos of his wife/supermodel Lisa Fonssagrives, whose signature extended eyeliner symbolizes the epitome of elegance.” To mimic this modelina’s beauty, “I paired ultra feminine colors with super sculptural liner for a cool update on that classic, late 50′s silhouette,” explains Goodwin.

“I applied CHANEL Liquid Eyeliner in Noir along the lash line for an exaggerated cat eye effect, adding extra lashes on just the very outer edges for added length. I then used two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir on the top lashes and one coat of the same mascara in Purple on the bottom lashes,” explains Goodwin.

“The rest of her face was kept understated using minimal foundation, a pale pink cream blush on her cheeks, and CHANEL Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Confidence over her lips.”

“I then dusted her brow bone and lids with a loose, iridescent pearl shadow that had a hint of purple to play off of the reflective quality of her dress.”

Drew Barrymore

We are currently obsessing over Drew Barrymore—and the naturally gorgeous look she flaunted at The Late Show with David Letterman this week in New York City. We’re actually loving it so much that we tracked down the makeup artist behind the scenes, the talented Debra Ferullo, to give us the inside scoop on what products she used to enhance this bombshell’s beauty:

“I started by prepping her face with La Mer The Moisturizing Lotion. Then, I patted on primer [to help the look stay], followed by La Mer The Treatment Fluid Foundation.” [For a flawless complexion—and to avoid unsightly streaks—press or stipple the formula into skin with a damp round sponge, applying it only on the areas you need it most to keep the coverage from looking cakey.]

“I then lined her entire eye [upper and lower lashlines] with a Brown Eye Pencil by MAC and smudged it out [to soften it up a bit],” adds Ferullo. To give her gaze a more smoky effect, “I topped the liner with CoverGirl Shadow Blast Shadow Stick in Gold, and finished off the look with three coats of Fresh Supernova Mascara in Black.”

To mimic a naturally flushed look on her cheeks, “I used Smashbox Blush Rush in Bright Fuscia and applied it with a big, fluffy brush to give it a softer feel.” And to get that barely-there yet glossy lip, “I swiped on MAC Lipstick in Please Me and topped it off with CoverGirl Shine Blast Lip Gloss in Aglow.
