BEHIND THE BRUSHES: Makeup Artist Kathy Jeung
Inspired by: “The colors from the ’80s. I wanted to modernize that time when women would layer tons of colors on their faces in any kind of mish mash fashion and still look fabulous. I wanted to give that look both structure and softness.”
This summer: Working on the set of Transformers 3 as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s personal makeup artist.
Beauty tip to live by: “Don’t overwhelm your face with color. Use this story to get giddy and excited, and then add a dash of color to your own look.
MAKEUP MOMENT
When you’re layering two colors of shadow, as Jeung did for this pink and orange look, “Try wetting your brush before applying powder shadow—it’s easier to draw a precise line, plus it helps it stay put. Or try loose powders, which have richly concentrated color and adhere well to the skin,” she says.

When the textures are complex, wild colors can still look subtle and seductive. “Try layering a matte cream shadow underneath an iridescent powder and visa versa—the combo punches up a look in a way a single product cannot,” says Jeung.

Sometimes, the unconventional colors you’re craving won’t be at the makeup counter. (Mustard yellow, anyone?) “For extremely vibrant shades, I like using richly pigmented stage makeup. Kryolan has a wonderful collection of 16 iridescent colors in a mini-palette,” says Jeung. “You’ll get tons of variety and because they’re so potent, they last forever.”

Even pastel hues, like this sea foam shade, can look intense when applied with gusto. “Give your lids a sheer wash of cream shadow and then top it with a matching powder for extra intense color,” says Jeung.

Lea Michele
“I go for the natural look in my daily life. I don’t blow out my hair and wear just a little foundation. I like my skin to breathe.”—Lea Michele

HAIR HOW-TO
“This messy, curly look is something we haven’t seen on Lea before,” says Townsend. “I wanted it a little damp and imperfect, like she’d really been dancing.” He worked a dollop of Dove Damage Therapy Curl & Sculpt Defining Mousse into damp strands and blew them out with a roundbrush. He grabbed three-inch sections and wrapped them around a 1-½ inch curling iron. “Be sure you go through the entire head, although the spirals can be kind of random,” he says. To finish, Townsend mixed a blend of Dove Frizz Control Taming Cream and sandbox sand in the palm of his hand and raked it through her hair. (Yes, you read correctly.) “I’ve been using this trick since before all the great beach sprays came out. Sandbox sand is super, super fine. This paste thickens the hair and clumps it together without making it crunchy,” he says.
